According to Hume Police District officers, scammers have called victims and told them Prime Minister Scott Morrison would give all pensioners $1500 to assist with living costs.
The scammer directs the victim to go to the post office and purchase as many Google Play cards as possible.
Victims are told to call the scammer back, scratch off the security seal from the back of the cards and read the verification numbers to the scammer over the phone.
One victim in Goulburn purchased $2100 worth of Google Play cards in late March, and supplied all verification numbers to the scammer over the phone.
On this occasion what appeared to be an ACT landline number, 02 6100 8484, was used by the scammer.
Police said this was a Skype phone number and it was not a landline phone number.
The phone number has been identified as a former number of a business in the ACT, which has not been used for several years.
Residents are warned not to pay any person in Google Play cards, iTunes cards or any other redeemable card.
