The announcement was made by Whitlam MP Stephen Jones during Earth Hour at the botanic gardens on Saturday night.
CEO Charlotte Webb said the grant would make a "big difference" to the project.
"It's really an advancement in the progress of the botanic gardens," she said.
"This will allow us to have an all-weather venue and to start our full education program for the gardens.
"It will also add a new community facility to use for purposes aside from education, [such as] if people want to have a small function."

The SHBG is a volunteer, not-for-profit establishing new botanic gardens in Bowral, with a master plan that includes the gardens, a sculpture museum, function centre and the education centre.
The project has continued to develop, and grow over the past decade and a half.
As this growth continues, it will provide a place in the community that can be used for recreation, education and artistic and cultural events.
This funding will allow the SHBG to take the next step in achieving its vision.
Development of the site is well underway, with Mr Jones delighted to support the organisation in the next step of expanding the project.
The education centre will be built adjacent to the existing plant nursery and volunteer centre and will also provide light café services for visitors.
