By all accounts, little separates the incumbent Liberal government and Labor opposition. Many pundits however predict that the minor parties will have far greater influence than elections before.
Regardless of which party wins, we're guaranteed two new faces in the seats of Wollondilly and Goulburn following the resignation of Jai Rowell and the retirement of Pru Goward MP. Both these electoral districts cover our shire.
At a local government level the result from either a state or federal election has little direct influence on day-to-day operations. They do, however, have a massive indirect effect on the council and the wider community, especially in regards to grant and funding monies.
Voting is of course a very personal decision but if I were to make one suggestion, it would be to look at the long-term track records of all parties on the ballot paper. Look beyond the electioneering and promises of the past month and ask yourself what projects have been delivered to date and what commitments have been made for the future? Will these commitments help a few or a majority and will they safeguard the future of our shire and state?
I wish all candidates the very best of luck, and the council and I look forward to working with whoever should wake up victorious on Sunday morning.
