Councillors voted to approach the state election candidates to remove the levy applied to council at the council meeting at Moss Vale Civic Centre on February 27.
A motion was moved that the general manager make representation to all NSW state election candidates for the electoral seats of Goulburn and Wollondilly to seek their support for the removal of the metropolitan waste levy applied to Wingecarribee Shire Council "as it is unfair and unjust to the residence and council of the shire".
A motion was also moved that the differential between metropolitan and regional waste levy be repaid to council for the last five years.
This will amount to about $5.5 million in repayments.
The motion was moved by councillors Garry Turland, Gordon Markwart, Grahame Andrews and Graham McLaughlin.
According to the NSW Environmental Protection Authority (EPA), the metropolitan solid waste levy is $142.20 per tonne, while the regional levy is $81.30 per tonne for 2018 to 2019.
The levy on trackable liquid waste is $75.60 per tonne.
The concessional waste levy rate for virgin excavated natural material is $127.08 per tonne for metropolitan levy areas and $73.17 per tonne for regional levy areas.
In line with the waste regulation, the 2019 to 20 waste levy rates will increase according to the consumer price index.
The waste levy aims to reduce the amount of waste being landfilled and promote recycling and resource recovery.
