The installation called 'Eternal Flame" was initially put up by ANZ to celebrate their partnership with Mardi Gras.
What was meant to be a bright addition to Oxford Street, Mittagong, and represented an equal future and inclusivity for the LGBTIQ+ community was graffitied overnight much to the dismay of residents who were celebrating the installation the day before.
One resident who was 'proud' to have the installation on the street thought that it was "disappointing that someone could do a thing like that".
An ANZ spokesperson said that they were dissapointed that some people have resorted to vandalism to make their point.
"ANZ’s Oxford street installations and our long-standing involvement in the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras are about celebrating a culture of diversity, inclusion and respect," they said.
"In this spirit we respect some people will have different views, but there is no place for vandalism here or in the broader community.
"We will make sure our Mittagong Oxford Street sign is cleaned up as soon as possible".
If anyone has any information, please call Southern Highlands Police Station on 4868 1222.
The installation will be available until March 4.
