Year 9 agriculture students from Chavalier College will participate in the annual Meat Bird Pairs Competition as part of the Royal Easter Show.
The practical farming exercise will give students insight into the poultry industry as they raise chicks.
Two of the healthiest and heaviest male and female chicks will be selected and judged, with the top 12 birds to be put on display at the Steggles Poultry Pavilion.
Close attention will need to be paid to ensure the right amount of heat, feed and water is provided for the chicks, as well as adequate shelter to keep them safe.
Year 11 students will oversee the progress of the chickens.
The general manager of agriculture at the Royal Easter Show, Murray Wilton, said the competition is ideal for schools with limited space to engage in an agricultural project.
“The competition gives high school students relevant and meaningful agricultural industry experience, and we are proud to be able to help provide an opportunity for students to learn about Australian farming practices,” said Wilton.
Head of Steggles livestock, Jorje Ruiz, said that over the past nine years, the program has seen over 10 000 day-old chicks cared for by secondary students across NSW.
“Steggles are proud to be a key partner with the Sydney Royal Easter Show to provide fun and interactive learning experiences within agriculture, and help guide the students on how to raise chickens,” said Ruiz.
The competition will be judged by experts from the poultry industry.
Students will be critiqued on presentation, carcass quality, and a PowerPoint presentation detailing how the birds were raised.
Judging and presentations will take place April 12- 13 at the Sydney Royal Easter Show.
