Robert, known as Bob, grew up in South Africa and after surviving political revolutions and back-breaking work in copper mines is now a proud resident of the Southern Highlands.
Bob and his wife, Prue, lived in Sydney for 23 years and were drawn to the Highlands like many before them who seek a tree-change.
“We fell in love with the Highlands,” Bob said.
“The trees and the way they change colour over the seasons, the region just had us.
“The life that we have built here is sublime.”
Although happy in the Southern Highlands, Bob stressed that his youth was drastically different.
After a privileged childhood which passed on a farm and in his father’s many hotels, Bob started to question the segregation rampant in South Africa at the time.
“We should have had integration all throughout my childhood,” he said.
Nelson Mandela and the end of apartheid “all happened too late.”
The author’s debut novel Jackie Hangman was inspired by a chance encounter with the Selous Scouts in the 1970s.
Bob says that the novel is dedicated to “all those men who fought and died and became a nonentity” during the Rhodesian War.
While busy at work on a sequel, Bob has a new book to be released.
Fewer than Nine is a world apart from his previous novel.
The new book is inspired by a rescue kitten which grew into a loved member of his family.
“I’d like to dedicate something, [the cat] was such a great part of our life.”
Jackie Hangman is available online at www.amazon.com and Fewer than Nine will be released soon.
