The former NSW Waratahs' back has returned to his childhood city of Brisbane after an off-season swap with Karmichael Hunt.
Hunt impressed in the centres on the weekend in his Waratahs debut and, after a first-round bye for the Reds, Hegarty hopes to follow suit at fullback on Friday against the Highlanders.
He said helping emerging five-eighth Hamish Stewart would be central to that, particularly in attack where the side were yet to click.
"I'll try to help Hamish out as much as I can, give him that second voice and support him and the calls he's making, and being that loud voice for the team to get around the park," he said.
"Trial games are trial games - you get what you need out of them - and our defence was looking good but we've been working on our attack the last two weeks.
"Hopefully, it'll click this weekend."
The Reds travel on Tuesday to Dunedin, giving them clear air ahead of a clash Hegarty knows could shape their season before their first home game on March 2 against the Crusaders.
"People have spoken about the potential (we have) ... (last season we were) going hard but losing games we should've been winning," he said.
"It's our opportunity to start the season how we want to start."
