She watched as family members went on to play the sport they truly love. Alana may not play the game but she has so much wisdom to share.
Seventeen year old, Alana Sargood has been appointed the Bowral Kookaburras, under 16 girls league tag coach for the 2019 season.
She is set to bring a mixture of youth, energy and knowledge to the position.
Over the past two seasons, Alana has assisted the team and seen them go from learning the basics to beating some of the best teams in the competition.
“I’ve helped out the past couple of seasons by running water and other assisting duties,” Alana said.
“The girls have really improved over the past two seasons, especially considering most of them had never played football before.
“It’s going to be a good challenge but I’m looking forward to it.
“I’m sure it will get difficult at times but everything you do in life that’s worthwhile will be a challenge.
“It will be very rewarding at the end of the day.”
Alana’s family has always loved the game of rugby league. She was introduced to the sport at a young age and has absorbed so much information in such a short amount of time she can’t wait to share it.
“My brothers always played league and the family has always watch it,” Alana said.
“I’ve never played myself but my family have always been around the game. I’ve also always been around the club so it’s essentially been ingrained into me.
“I think it was the right time for the girls to have a new coach.
“I figured it would be a good challenge for me and it would help me as well as helps the girls. I also feel it will be good to have a female coach guiding the girls this season.”
The Kookaburras have got behind Alana and the ladies squad. They want to continue the culture that is being built within the club and the team.
“All the coaches have been so supportive towards me,” Alana said.
“If I ever need help with anything, they’re just a message away. I can also happily approach them with a question. Everyone’s been really helpful and there for me.
I’m sure it will get difficult at times but everything you do in life that’s worthwhile will be a challenge.
- Alana Sargood
“The culture at the club is amazing.” The team finished the 2018 season in fifth. With such humble beginnings it was an excellent result for the Kookaburras. But for the 2019 season, Alana has big hopes for her and the team.
“I’d like for the team to see finals this year,” Alana said.
“But even if we don’t make the finals, I just want to see the girls enjoying themselves and developing as players and individuals.
“I’m looking forward to watching the girls evolve as a team, advance their individual football skills and mature as people.”
