Robertson train station has undergone a number of upgrades to spruce up the station grounds and gardens with those doing community service helping maintain the much valued community asset for the past two years.
The maintenance seems to have paid off with over 200 people stopping and admiring the gardens as the newly returned ‘cockatoo train’ service rolled in to station during the afternoon.
Ian Wallace from the Robertson Historic Railway Station is thankful to Corrective NSW and offenders for providing much needed assistance.
“Without their assistance provided on a regular basis, the RHRS volunteers - most of whom are retired people - would find it very difficult to fully maintain our valuable community asset,” said Mr Wallace.
The railway station site, run by the not-for-profit community group, also features a museum, waratah gardens (main flowering time is early to mid-October) and a Bert Flugelman sculpture.
The Cockatoo Run train journey departs from Sydney and follows a scenic coastal route through the Illawarra, before climbing 600m over the escarpment, through rainforest and past waterfalls, to arrive in Robertson. The next train journey will be March 24.
