Bowral High School student, Cameron Johnston, has showcased his artwork at the annual ArtExpress exhibition.
A selection of 56 artworks by NSW HSC visual arts students will be shown statewide as part of the exhibition.
Johnston’s work was chosen from 8870 pieces submitted for consideration.
The young artist took inspiration from his life when creating his work.
“My artwork is an exploration of the journey that my brother, father and myself undertook after losing contact with my mother after divorce,” he said.
Johnston expressed gratitude for the opportunity to be a part of the exhibition. He stated that he “felt honoured and that this is something that he will never look at lightly.”
“When I was nominated for Artexpress I couldn’t hold in my happiness and I remember telling everybody at school and at home about what had happened,” he said.
Art Gallery of NSW director, Michael Brand, congratulated all students and said that the creation of work for the HSC required an enormous amount of thought, experimentation, creative thinking and perseverance.
“ArtExpress 2019 shows the depth of talent among students in NSW. These sophisticated, imaginative and highly resolved bodies of work reveal complex investigations by today’s student artists,” Brand said.
The exhibition reflects on the importance of family, overcoming adversity and the impact of technology on modern life. The young artists explore issues of gender, diversity, mental health and environment through their work.
Johnston offered some advice for students who will commence their own major works this year. He urged students to choose a subject matter or concept that they care about, to start early and to collaborate with their teachers.
ArtExpress premiered at the Art Gallery of NSW February 7.
