Robertson Heritage Railway Station Inc. (RHRS) has announced that the ‘Cockatoo Run’ heritage tourist train will recommence running from Sydney to Robertson this weekend.
Train travellers can enjoy a journey from the past, while onlookers will be treated to a sight that will stir memories, and make for some stunning photographs.
The return of the heritage train, run by operator 3801 Limited, follows a period of time during which the future of the Cockatoo Run appeared uncertain.
Former RHRS president Ian Wallace said local fans were thrilled to see it back up and running.
“The volunteers of 3801 Limited have undertaken the necessary preparations and propose running the train on a regular basis, about every four weeks,” said Mr Wallace.
The Cockatoo Run’s first journey back will see five heritage carriages including a buffet car and a lounge car being hauled by the meticulously restored mainline heritage diesel-electric locomotive 42101.
This heritage train’s journey will start in Sydney and travel along the scenic Illawarra/South Coast line to Wollongong before ascending the Illawarra Escarpment.
It will climb 600 metres through rain-forests, past waterfalls and over an historic viaduct.
It stops at Summit Tank for passengers to admire the view over Lake Illawarra and then visits the historic Southern Highland township of Robertson.
RHRS congratulated 3801 Limited volunteers for their persistence and hard work over the last year to make these tours a reality and wished them every success.
“This is very popular day-trip, which traverses some of the most spectacular scenery close to Sydney,” said Mr Wallace.
RHRS volunteers will be on hand at Robertson station to meet the train.
Tickets to the train trip can be purchased here.
The next service after that is scheduled for Sunday, March 24.
