Wingecarribee Shire Council has spoken about the federal government’s plan to make councils hold a citizenship ceremony on January 26.

Under changes to the Australian Citizenship Ceremonies Code to be introduced in the first half of 2019, councils must hold a citizenship ceremony on Australia Day and September 17 - Australian Citizenship Day.
Prime Minister Scott Morrison said a strict dress code for the ceremonies would be introduced, which ruled out the wearing of board shorts and thongs.
A council spokeswoman said council would comply with any changes introduced by statute by the Commonwealth Government, if introduced.
“Four ceremonies were held in the Wingecarribee Shire last year to welcome around 60 new citizens - these ceremonies were held on Australia Day, April 20, July 20 and October 19,” she said.
“This Australia Day, 34 of our newest citizens will pledge their commitment to the Commonwealth of Australia.”
On Saturday, January 26, Wingecarribee Shire Council will mark Australia Day with a citizenship ceremony, as well as a presentation and a parade.
