Two Southern Highlands students have been given the opportunity to push their limits as they embark upon an outdoor wilderness adventure next year.

Moss Vale High School year 9 students, Makayla Jones and Colin Cooksley, have been sponsored by the Moss Vale and Bowral Lions Clubs to attend the Outward Bound Navigator course, a 12-day adventure set in the Southern Alps, south of Canberra.
Makayla and Colin were selected after successful interviews with Lions Club members and will join a group of 12 other students from around Australia as they go well outside their comfort zone and trek through mountainous country, across rivers and abseil down cliffs.

They will be sleeping under a bivouac at night, preparing and eating food they have carried in their back packs and on one night, they will travel by moon and torchlight up a mountain to see a spectacular sunrise from the peak, learning aspects of self-confidence, self-knowledge, motivation and leadership.
Makayla said she was looking forward to overcoming challenging experiences and adventurous activities and hoped to pass on newly learned skills to others on her return.
Colin said he was pleased to have been given the opportunity to attend an Outward Bound course, which will give him the chance to push himself further and grow as a person.
The program costs $2280 to attend and both student have received $2000 sponsorship from local charities including club grants from Mittagong RSL and The Services Club in Moss Vale, Gubbins Pullbrook Group and the Argyle Hotel Southern Highlands, as well as the Lions Clubs of Bowral and Moss Vale.
While the remaining $280 comes from each student’s own resources.
The Outward Bound Navigator course is 12-day personal development experience for youth aged 15 to 17. The program was founded in the Uk in 1941 and has since spread to 30 schools across 6 continents with nearly 2 million people worldwide having completed an Outward Bound course.
