Council in collaboration with the Roads and Maritime Services has tailored a workshop targeting Aboriginal Elders.
The inaugural Elders Art of Road Safety workshop was held in October at the Aboriginal Cultural Centre in Mittagong.
Council’s Aboriginal Community Development Officer, Melissa Wiya, said the workshop is a successful combination of art and education.
“Six large sized cushions have been decorated with the Bring the Mob Home Safely road safety message,” she said.
“These cushions are now on display at the Cultural Centre and will feature at future events.”
The aim of the workshop was to limit the impact that ageing has on driving ability, helping our ageing community to remain independent and safe on our roads.
Participants discussed safe driving techniques, licensing options, child restraints, vehicle safety and current road rules.
“Elders not only play an integral part in preserving traditional knowledge, but their stories also help to educate and inform the community on a range of topics,” said Melissa.
“This workshop has helped to ensure our Elders are well equipped to share stories and improve road safety for Aboriginal people.”
The Elders Art of Road Safety workshop was funded under the Local Government Road Safety Program.
