This is how NewAccess coach Thyme Gordon describes the free program designed to help people with mental health problems.

NewAccess was developed by BeyondBlue program to provide support for a range of issues including mild to moderate depression, anxiety, stress, worry, phobias and life difficulties for people over the age of 18.

Ms Gordon said there was a lot of unemployment in the region, particularly in the Southern Highlands.

She said isolation was also an issue in the Highlands.

The six-week program provides people with help to set practical goals to cope with the day-to-day pressures and does not require a GP referral or mental health plan.

Ms Thyme said participants could speak to a specially trained coach, who helped them provide them with tools to cope with their current situation and ensure that “no matter what happens, they’re ok”.

She said NewAccess had received 1500 referrals in the past two years from January 2017 through to November 2018.

Sessions can be held face-to-face, over the phone or via skype.

The first session is used to help establish a tailored program for each individual.

After the six sessions had been completed, Ms Thyme said there was also a follow up appointment to check in on the client and make sure they were still doing ok.

She said over the past 18 months, the program had been a big success in the Highlands.

“The recovery rate is outstanding. The people you see from week one and to see the change in people and see it work...it’s amazing.

“It’s free, easy to access and it works.”
