Seven people – including four children – have been transferred to hospital following a HAZMAT incident at Wollondilly Leisure Centre this morning.

Local emergency service crews were called to the Picton facility about 9.55am on Monday, December 3.

One child in a serious condition was transferred to Campbelltown Hospital.

Three adults and three other children – including a three-year-old – have been transferred to Campbelltown and Bowral hospitals in a stable condition.

A Wollondilly Council spokeswoman said a chemical spill occurred at the pool during an operational need to use a super dose of disinfectant.

The council spokeswoman said the spill resulted in fumes and emergency services were called to the facility.

Paramedics have treated nine children and one adult for mild to moderate breathing issues.

A NSW Ambulance spokesman said patients had experienced symptoms such as coughing and vomiting.

The spokesman said paramedics remained on scene at the Wollondilly Leisure Centre.

The Wollondilly Leisure Centre’s indoor pool will remain closed for the next few hours following a HAZMAT incident this morning.

Local emergency service crews – including 11 ambulance teams – were called to the Picton centre about 9.55am on Monday, December 3.

A Wollondilly Council spokeswoman said a chemical spill occurred at the pool during an operational need to use a super dose of disinfectant.

The council spokeswoman said the spill resulted in fumes and emergency services were called to the facility.

She said swimming lessons were taking place in the pool when the incident occurred.

“Emergency services have arranged for the observation of those who have pre-existing respiratory issues,” the spokeswoman said. 

“In the indoor space, the fumes can be too strong and affect you.”

The spokeswoman said council would following its procedures for incidents and investigate what caused the chemical spill.

The council spokeswoman said the indoor pool would remain closed until mid-afternoon as a precaution.

The centre’s outdoor pool, gym and foyer remain open.

A Fire and Rescue NSW spokesman said pre-mix chemicals added to the centre’s indoor swimming pool caused some swimmers to experience respiratory issues.

A NSW Ambulance spokesman said paramedics had treated nine children and one adult for mild to moderate breathing issues.

The spokesman said four people had been transferred to hospital, including one child to Campbelltown Hospital in a serious condition.

He said three other children and one adult were in a stable condition and transferred to Campbelltown and Bowral hospitals.

The FRNSW spokesman said the chemicals caused a “gas cloud” at the centre.

He said water and ventilation testing was currently underway and the indoor swimming pool remained temporarily closed.

FRNSW, ambulance and police remain at the scene.

Wollondilly Leisure Centre is partially closed due to a HAZMAT incident this morning (Monday, December 3).

Local emergency service crews were called to the Picton centre about 10.30am.

It is understood the centre’s indoor swimming pool will be closed until about noon.
