That is the opinion, Dr Saan Ecker, the latest candidate to throw their hat into the ring for the Federal Government election expected for early 2019.
Dr Ecker will represent the Greens as a candidate in the Hume electorate which takes in parts of the Southern Highlands.
Greens Senator for NSW Mehreen Faruqi says Dr Ecker had her full support as candidate and current Hume MP “Angus Taylor and the Coalition have been missing in action for too long on energy policy.”
“Australia needs principled and determined leadership that prioritises communities over major corporations. I know Dr Ecker can deliver that leadership," she said.
Dr Ecker has lived and worked in the Southern Tablelands since 2005.
She is standing for the seat of Hume because of her lifelong commitment to social equity, responsible environmental management and grassroots democracy.
Dr Ecker is a professional social science and environmental researcher.
Having worked in natural resource management in rural areas for more than 20 years, she has expertise in topics relevant to rural areas including sustainable agriculture, water catchment management, biodiversity conservation, environmental stewardship, pest management, agri-tourism and food tourism.
The government’s failure to act on climate change has motivated Dr Ecker to run.
Faruqi said inaction on climate change had caused the suffering of farmers who were on the frontline of drought impacts, the loss of biodiversity and habitat and shows the major parties do not care about future generations.
“Australian people are ready for a change. We need to address government idleness on climate change and no party is more committed to this than The Greens,” she said.
“Voting for The Greens in the current energy minister’s electorate is the best way to send a message that we care about our climate emergency and need to fix it.”
Dr Ecker said this government was “impeding our much-needed transition to renewable energy” and was peddling mistruths about the role of renewables in the spiralling cost of energy.
“This government is not acting for the common good of ordinary people or the environment, and certainly not with any common sense,” she said.
