The Chevalier College production 'Baskerville - A Sherlock Holmes Mystery' has been nominated for 10 gongs across six categories in the 2018 Canberra Area Theatre Awards.
A school spokesperson said that presented in May, this year's Chevalier College production of Baskerville was a “truly rewarding experience in the theatre”.
The fast-paced comedy by Ken Ludwig is a zany took on Sherlock's most famed whodunit, and gave director Kate Price, the production team and cast members plenty of scope to improvise and showcase their diverse talents.
With atmospheric music, clever lighting and creative sets, the misty moors, smoky train stations and cobbled streets of London in the 1920s came to life with a passing parade of madcap characters who kept you guessing right till the end.
The CAT Awards recognise the enormous contribution made by non-professional groups to the artistic life of Australia, in particular in Canberra and surrounding regions, and are encouraging to individuals, theatre companies and schools in the performing arts.
A Gala Evening will be held in Canberra to present the awards on February 23, 2019 and will be a big occasion for all attending nominees.
CAT nominees for Baskerville are:
- Best Costume Design for a School/Youth Production – Joanne Crow, Ann Philippe and Denise Hiser
- Best Youth Actor in a Featured Role in a Play – Sam Malone as Mr Stapleton, Griff Brindley as Doctor Watson and Lewis Gardiner as Sir Henry Baskerville
- Best Youth Actress in a Featured Role in a Play – Jemima Roberts as Lucy/Daisy/Maid/Woman with Baby, Beatrice McRobbie as Dr McCann/Nurse Malloy and Gussie King as Miss Stapleton
- Best Youth Actor in a Leading Role in a Play – Reuben Bacon as Sherlock Holmes
- Best Director of a School/Youth Play – Kate Price
- Best Production of a School/Youth Play- Baskerville - A Sherlock Holmes Mystery
Baskerville is also eligible for nominations in other CAT Awards categories yet to be announced.
Chevalier College is now looking toward continued great entertainment at the school with plans already underway for the 2019 musical production of Ben Elton's 'We Will Rock You' - the rock musical based on the songs of British rock band Queen.
Students have been called to audition and excitement is building towards using the newly refurbished Performing Arts Centre facilities at the college for the show’s rehearsals.
