Wingecarribee Health Association for Men Inc. (WHAM Inc) has commenced Southern Highlands Men’s Health Month with a focus on aged care.
About 40 men and women gathered at the auditorium of St Jude’s Anglican Church in Bowral to hear more on the topic from Margaret Crothers, Advocate/Educator Regional Coordinator for Seniors Rights Services NSW.
Dr Terry Flynn, the Patron of WHAM Inc, welcomed everyone to what hasd become a much anticipated event and gave an update on works at the Bowral District Hospital. Dr Flynn expanded on what the new entrance to the Emergency Department might look like when finished and was excited with what the new Emergency Department would offer.
Margaret Crothers said that most probably only 20 percent of the population relied on the Seniors Rights Services. She said it was a part of the Older Persons Advocacy Network (OPAN) and provided Aged Care advocacy and legal advice to older people. Information on access to all aged care services are available at My Aged Care www.myagedcare.gov.au or call 1800 200 422
Seniors Rights Services provide advocacy for residents living in aged care homes (and their representatives), and for older people receiving Home Care packages or Commonwealth Home Support. Advocates assist people to make sound choices about aged care and to gain a thorough understanding of their rights and responsibilities and help uphold their rights. They listen to concerns, explain rights and help clarify issues. They are empowered to raise concerns, contact care managers with permission to raise concerns and can assist to make a formal complaint.
Seniors Rights Services is a government-funded community legal centre that protects the rights of older people and also provides telephone advice, legal advice and educational services. For further information https//seniorsrightsservice.org.au or 1800 424 079
On November 12 St Vincent de Paul’s local area coordinator for the National Disability Insurance Scheme will explain what is needed to access support and programs within their community so they can participate in a regular life.
