On the eleventh hour, of the eleventh day, of the eleventh month 1918 the armistice was signed between the allies of World War I and Germany at Compiègne, France.
It marked the end of hostilities on the Western Front, ending World War I.
With the 100th anniversary of the truce now upon us Highlanders are set to commemorate the special occasion in various ways.
Here is a list of activities to help you take part in this very special day of remembrance:
- Colo Vale: Colo Vale Community Association Inc will stop for remembrance at Colo Vale Memorial from 10.30am.
This will include letters of remembrance from soldiers, a musical tribute to the fallen, wartime poems and a dedication of the new metal soldier with bugle sculpture.
The service will be followed by a complementary Sausage Sizzle courtesy of Bunnings Mittagong, and tea/coffee in the hall.
- Mittagong: The Mittagong RSL sub-branch will hold an Armistice Day Service at the Mittagong Memorial, corner of Old Hume Highway and Bowral Road.
War veterans will march to the memorial and the service will commence at 10:35am and should conclude at about 11:20.
Also in attendance will be the 3RAR Vietnam Veterans reunion. All are welcome to attend the morning of remembrance.
- Bowral: Bowral RSL sub- Branch, under the leadership of president John Cummins, will hold a commemorative service at Bowral War Memorial Park on the corner of Bong Bong and Merrigang Streets, Bowral.
This will begin at 10:30am and conclude at about 11:15am.
Naval Personnel from HMAS Albatross in Nowra will provide the Cataflaque Party and the guest speaker will be Commander Anthony Savage RAN commanding officer of 816 squadron at Albatross.
- Bowral: A special Remembrance Day Service will be held at St Judes Anglican Church, Bendooley Street, Bowral, at 9:00am.
- Bowral: Bowral Uniting Church will be ringing the bells in remembrance of those who lost their lives during World War I on November 11, 2018.
The bells will join bells across Australia and the world in recognition of this important occasion in history at 11am. The bells will ring 11am after one minute of silence. This will occure at the church at 28 Bendooley Street, Bowral.
- Berrima: A service will commence at the Berrima Museum at 10.45am on November 11. This will be led by Berrima Public School. The service will commemorate the centenary of the Armistice that ended WWI and marks the closing of the exhibition at Berrima District Museum of 1200 stories of men and women of Berrima District in World War I.
- Purple poppies: Purple poppies will be available for purchase this weekend to remember animals lost in wars.
Friends of the Wingecarribee Animal Shelter (FOWAS) have been working in conjunction with Bowral House resident Margrett Salter, who has knitted 72 poppies purple poppies.
Margrett donated the poppies to FOWAS to sell at Bowral Public School Markets on November 10.
All funds raised will go towards supporting the animals at the Wingecarribee Animal Shelter.
