The cricket season is now underway on the Highlands and with it has come the rain! Great news for the farmers, not so great for our first grade turf competition, but our players and volunteers have done well to reschedule to different grounds and adapt.

Given this opportunity, I’d like to acknowledge and pay tribute to our volunteers. The junior coaches, the scorers (mums and dads), the club administrators, the association directors, the club supporters and teachers who coordinate out of school hours. There are so many people who contribute to local sport with their time and energy and don’t get paid a cent. Local sport such as cricket simply would not happen without them. To everyone involved in this area, I tip my lid to you and say THANK YOU and well done.
Often, we are quick to criticise others when things don’t go our way or we disagree with their decisions. Volunteers get involved because they love the game of cricket and want to help and serve. Volunteers have the best intentions and we need more people in this space to grow the game and make it more accessible for players of all ages and gender. From 2016/17 local cricket participation is up 25 percent overall and junior female participation up 70 percent thanks to the efforts of our volunteers to promote and service the game.
To all the local volunteers who freely give of their time, expertise, passion and positive energy to help and support those who play the game of cricket (and other sports), we salute you and appreciate you. To all the players and non-volunteers, please make a special effort to say “thank you” the next opportunity to these wonderful people and servants of the game – it won’t cost a lot but it will make the world of difference.
