With the Southern Highlands now part of the Greater Illawarra Cricket zone, three Highlanders were part of the Flames team that travelled to Bathurst to compete.
Jack Whitfield, Matthew Pike and Ben Wright were selected in the side.
Illawarra won its first match against Orana Outlaws, finishing their innings at 8-139.
Whitfield said early wickets helped them get the win and Pike bowled well.
“We won the first game reasonably well and were in control. We got [139] and defended it well.”
The Flames did not have the same success in their match against the Central West Wranglers.
The Wranglers finished their innings at 5-176 before they dismissed Illawarra for 103.

“We dropped some chances which didn’t help but we weren’t able to create enough pressure. We didn’t have any key partnerships [with the bat],” Whitfield said.
“Matt [Pike] bowled well again to try and stem the runs.”
While the Flames team was full of experienced senior representative players, with the Highlands being in a new zone, it was the first time many of them had played together.
“There was a lot of learning and there’ll be a lot of positives to come,” Whitfield said.
Highlands players will now be in the mix for the McDonalds Country Championship which will be held in November.
