With these alarming statistics it is not surprising that there a variety of fundraising events – Biggest Morning Tea, Pink up your town, Movember to name a few – focussed entirely on raising funds for cancer research and to support people affected by cancer.
Relay for Life is one such event that brings together people from all walks of life to remember those who have lost their battle with the disease, those who are living with cancer, those who are carers of someone diagnosed with cancer and those who just want to show their support for a better future, hopefully someday cancer-free.
It is an inspiring event held biennially in the Southern Highlands and will be held for the seventh time this weekend at the Moss Vale Showground. The event was first held in 2006, the last event was held in April 2016. The 24-hour walk has traditionally attracted many thousands of people and raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for cancer research.
Organisers are hoping for similar success this weekend and have set a fundraising target of $140,000. The line-up currently sits at about 450 people registered to take part but organisers expect about 800 people will put their best forward for this year’s event. If you haven't already entered a team then there is still time.
By doing so you are not only showing your support for anyone who has ever been affected by cancer, you are becoming a part of an event that connects the people of the Highlands in an inspiring and valuable way. It is an event that has always tended to showcase an amazing sense of a caring, unified community.
It is an experience not to be forgotten from the continual relay-style walk around the track, to the Survivors' and Carers’ Walk, the Candlelight Ceremony of Hope in memory of those who have lost the battle with cancer, the endless entertainment and activities, inspiring guest speakers, the very entertaining Miss Relay Pageant and the wrap up of the event on Sunday morning.
Relay for Life is a celebration of life and hope that everyone needs to experience.
People can sign up online at anytime and they can also register at the registration tent on the day. Registrations don’t close. Funds raised will help the Cancer Council’s life-saving research, prevention, advocacy and support programs for Highlanders including its Transport to treatment program.
