Mittagong Hockey Club’s first grade men’s side had a 4-2 win over Robertson at Welby Oval on Saturday, September 22.
Mittagong played well in the first half, but it was anyone’s game at half-time with the scored locked at 0-0.
Mittagong coach Graham Isedale encouraged his team to “stick with it” at the break.
“We had a lot of chances in the first half, they had the odd one,” he said.
“I think our fitness actually came over the top of them in the end, which I didn't expect. They [Mittagong] held it well and outran them.”
Stand-out players for Mittagong included Jake Isedale, Nelson Worner, Andrew Pinkerton and Cameron Hughes.
Mittagong’s Jake Isedale score two goals minutes into the second half and again with just under 18 minutes to go.
The third goal went Jake Mercieca, with just under 15 minutes to go.
Hughes scored the Lions final goal of the night.
Robertson finished the game with eight men after a player received a red card late in the match.
Nathan Wright scored a goal for Robertson with just over five minutes to go.
Meanwhile Damian Gair contributed to the team’s total with just under three minutes on the clock.
Robertson had a short corner just as game ended but were unable to find the back of the net, with the final score remaining at 4-2.
Robertson captain/coach Brendon McDonald said while his team didn’t get the win, it had been a good season.
“Mittagong were good, they were too fast with the ball for us,” he said.
“We haven’t had a first grade in Robertson for five years. To come back and put a bit of show on was good.
“It got a bit fiery towards the end but that’s how it is between Mittagong and Robertson. It has been for years.
“The game was played in good spirit. Hopefully everyone comes back next year and we go one better.”
