The under-13 Mittagong Cheetahs went through the season undefeated and finished the year with a 3-0 win over Robertson.
It was close in the first half and neither team was able to find the back of the net.
But within a couple of minutes of the second half, Mittagong opened the scoring.
The Petersen brothers Casey and Rory both scored for the Cheetahs and Henry Good got the final goal.
Cheetahs coach Michael Good said it had been a great season for his team and while it was a nervous first half, he was pleased with how his side fought back.
“[I was happy with] the way they came back from a poor first half and they started to control the ball and control the game through short passing and playing it out wider.”
Good said the team’s defence was great throughout the match, keeping Robertson scoreless.
In the under-15s match, Mittagong Cougars edged out a 1-0 win over Bowral Vikings to claim the premiership.
Bridget de Montemas scored for the Cougars in the first half and the match was a “close and exciting” one according to coach Andrew Knowles.
He said the Cougar’s defence played a big part in Tuesday night’s win.
“We had a talk about trying to mark out their strong players. They’ve got some really strong players in the midfield particularly.”
Knowles said goalkeeper Poppy Ward played well and made a “ridiculous save” late in the game to keep the Cougars in the lead.
He also praised William Gorman for his defensive efforts off short corners, which he said kept Bowral’s “strong hitter” Sienna Knowles from scoring.
Bowral had plenty of short corners throughout the game but coach Wayne Knapp said they were unable to capitalise of those opportunities.
“In the first half we had the better of the game but in the second half Mittagong seemed to get more control in the midfield and we couldn’t put the ball in the back of the net,” he said.
“We were happy to make the grand final and I hope the kids learnt something.”
The Bowral side was a mix of experienced players and some who hadn’t played much hockey before.
Knapp said the team came together well during the year.
Players such as Sienna Campese, Sarah Morton and Nicolas Milner lead the way with Jessica Temporali, Maddison Roberts, Ethan Lucock and Sophie Knapp improving throughout the year.
“It was a very close competition and on any day any team could win if they took their chances,” Knapp said.
