Everywhere you look across Australia sports people are preparing for their biggest clash of the year and supporters are donning their favourite colours to highlight there allegiances.
And finals season is well and truly underway in the Southern Highlands.
Already some of the 2018 premiers have been decided, with more grand finals ahead this weekend.
The Bowral Blacks made history winning both the first and second grade premierships in the Illawarra competition.
The Southern Highlands Netball Association crowned its 2018 champions last weekend as did Group 6, with Mittagong Lions the only Highlands team to feature in the deciders.
Over the last week, the junior hockey premiers have been decided and on Saturday it will be the seniors turn.
Senior grand finals will run all day at the Welby hockey fields with the first game kicking off at 9am.
Over at David Wood Playing Field, also on Saturday, the Highlands Soccer Association grand finals will be played.
All clubs in the association will be represented and plenty of close games are expected.
And while everyone will have their eyes on the prize this weekend, the most important thing to remember is to have fun and play the game in the right spirit.
Violence in two rugby league grand finals over the weekend resulted in severe consequences for a few of the clubs. One Highlands team has been caught up in the drama in the reserve grade clash between Mittagong Lions and Oran Park.
The second grade final before between Warragamba and City Kangaroos also had problems.
Players will be cited following the incidents, prize money has been withdrawn, fines issued and one club’s affiliation with Group 6, Oran Park, has been revoked.
Well done to Group 6 for taking immediate action after the regrettable incidents over the weekend to make it clear that poor behaviour is not accepted and there are repercussions.
We all appreciate passion on the sporting field and love to watch a competitive match but winning is not the be all and end all.
Surely it is much more satisfying to know you’ve played the best you can, whether your team comes away with the trophy or not.
Good luck to all those teams yet to compete in their grand finals. Here’s hoping they are memorial for all the right reasons.
