In fact about 340 students from public schools across the shire converged on Bowral High School to learn more about the these subjects as part of STEM DAY activities on August 14.

Students from Bowral, Glenquarry, Kangaloon  and Mittagong Public Schools engaged and learned from Bowral High science staff as well as some of the Gifted and Talented STEM students at the high school.

The STEM Day was run in support of National Science Week with Bowral High School among 365 schools awarded with a National Science Week schools grant in 2018.

The grants help schools to run activities and events during the week and are coordinated by the Australian Science Teachers Association, with funding from ​the Australian Government through the Inspiring Australia program.

The Bowral High School STEM Day targeted local primary school students providing an exciting opportunity aimeda at these students experiencing STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths).

The day aimed to inspire the younger students in Years 5 and 6 to pursue STEM in their future studies.

Sessions were also run by members from Sydney Women in Engineering and Information Technology (SWiEIT) at University of Technology Sydney (UTS) and the Department of Education’s IT Directorate (ITD).

Students were involved in a range of activities including coding Ozobots and Cosmobots, designing and launching water-powered rockets, 3D printing, floating houses challenge, LEGO Mindstorm, mechanical hand modelling, robotics, and a Virtual Reality (VR) experience.

The youngsters left with an increased knowledge, the power, tools, and self-confidence to pursue careers in these fields.
