Anglicare Moss Vale senior caseworker Sandra McCue said there had been a noticeable increase in the past two years, particularly with older people who haven't reached the retirement age.
"They've lost their job for one reason or another and are finding it very difficult to find another position. These are people that have always worked and provided for themselves suddenly finding they have very limited income and are unable to even afford rent on their own," Ms McCue said.
Anglicare's food and financial assistance program is run by a team of dedicated volunteers who offer a stopgap service, assisting with everything from food and bedding to advocacy and support.
Grace Avery was part of the committee that established Anglicare in the Southern Highlands.
"The perception is that the Highlands doesn't need support and that's just not true. Rent is very bad up here and there is no emergency housing. Costs of living are huge, especially in these winter months and for a lot of people it can mean the difference between food or paying their electricity bill," Ms Avery said.
Ms McCue said that Anglicare was in need of volunteers to meet the rising demand the organisation is facing. "We need five more Grace's. Caring and compassionate, but strong advocates for the vulnerable people in our community," she said.
Ms Avery said a large part of why she has continued to volunteer with Anglicare for 20 years was the sense of joy she gets in being of service to others.
"The relief people have when they walk out the door and the weight has been lifted. It's such a rewarding feeling when you've made a difference to their life.”
