Police across the Hume Police District will be working alongside officers from the Traffic and Highway Patrol Command, focusing on reducing rural road trauma by implementing several strategies targeting driver and rider behaviour.
Sadly, two-thirds of all fatal road accidents in NSW occur in rural areas. This has a devastating impact on local communities, families, loved ones, and the many men and women of the emergency services that attend. It is often a poor decision made by a driver or rider that contributes to the loss of lives, and it is our intention to actively target that behaviour.
Police will be highly visible across the district over the two day period, concentrating on random breath and drug testing, driver distractions such as mobile phone usage, seat belt offences, along with other driving offences such as speeding. We will be targeting backroads in smaller rural areas along with the major sectors within the Hume Police District.
Phase 1 of the operation held in April this year resulted in 16 arrests, 18 charges (including six prescribed concentration of alcohol offences and nine random drug tests) and 43 traffic infringement notices issued for seatbelt, mobile phone and other traffic offences. Over 3000 random breath tests were conducted.
We all enjoy the many freedoms that having a license provides. However, we are all too often reminded of the tragic outcomes that irresponsible and poor driver and rider behaviour brings. Help us to reduce road trauma by being more responsible and making better decisions.
