From a young age, Jasamine assisted her parents in the family business, Patterson’s Car Repairs and Service Station, after school and on weekends.
Her tasks consisted of fueling up vehicles for customers, serving customers at the register, filling up stock in the convenience store, general cleaning and invoicing for the mechanical business.
Jasamine said what she loved most about her first job was chatting to customers and contributing to the family business.
“By the time I was 15, I think most people in town (Werris Creek) knew who I was,” Jasamine said.
However, Jasamine wasn’t particularly keen on coming home smelling of Diesel or gear oil.
“They are two scents that are particularly impossible to wash out of clothes,” she said.
Jasamine’s parents have owned and run the business for the past 35 years which Jasamine learned a lot from.
She witnessed first-hand the hard work, long hours and the commitment it took to run and grow a business.
She said she would sit down with her parents each night and balance all the books where the day’s takings were recorded.
“I think I learned far more from this and the conversation that would flow when I asked questions about the numbers than anything I could have been taught in school,” Jasamine said.
This sparked Jasamine’s passion for the business industry and set her up for a successful career.
“I knew from the time I was about 15 that I wanted to study business further,” she said.
“It had later become quite clear that a career in banking was the one that most aligned with my values and was one where I could truly help people with their businesses.”
These life lessons prepared Jasamine for her current role as relationship manager of business banking at ANZ in Bowral.
