Don Chapman and Robin Staples defeated Ed Meester and Glen Giese 24-23 in the handicap pairs on Saturday, July 7. The first five ends went to Meester and Giese who held a 12-4 lead.
The pair looked in good shape to win the match as they led 19-12 after 14 ends.
Chapman and Staples remained dedicated and picked up five shots on the 18th end and hit the front for the first time in the match 22-20. The last three ends showed top bowls in the bleak winter weather, with Chapman and Staples hanging on for a one-shot win.
Fascinating first round match won by Morales and Lewis
The first round of the handicap pairs was played at Bowral Bowling Club on Friday, July 6. Peter Morales and Gordon Lewis defeated Richard Denman and Paul Leverett 26-21.
Morales and Lewis received a three-shot start, and shot to a 19-7 lead as the game progressed. Meanwhile Denman and Leverett pulled off big shots that had them very much in the game, and trailing by one shot on 21-20 with four ends to play. After a good fight back by Denman and Leverett, they lost the match by five shots aftyer Morales and Lewis went into the second round.

Mick Flynn and Clive Neutze defeated John Edmonds and Greg Taylor 29-21.
John Cummins and Ken Looke defeated Dan Ticehurst and Nathan Boyers 26-23. Kevin Jones and Ashley Lewis defeated Kel Limbrick and Don Coleman 26-19.
Excellent matches at Bowral Bowling Club
Team work was high in the social bowls on Wednesday, July 4.
Paul Rubie and Barry Werfel defeated Brian Bailey and David Chambers 20-19.
Bailey and Chambers were able to make the right shots early, and went to a 8-4 lead after eight ends.
The pair were right on target to win, as they had a 18-8 lead with six ends to play.
It required a huge effort by Rubie and Werfel to get back into the game. Rubie and Werfel came home stronger, as they scored 12 shots in five ends to be the winners by one shot. Meanwhile Bruce Frankland and Neville Tanner defeated Bill Donnelly and John Fleming 17-16.
Donnelly and Fleming had a 9-4 lead after nine ends, before Frankland and Tanner hit the front on the 13th end with 11-10. Donnelly and Fleming held a 16-14 lead with two ends to play. However Frankland and Tanner won the last two ends to win by one shot.
There was glowing praise for Bruce Frankland who played in his first match and picked the game up very quickly.

Keith Edwards and Gordon Lewis defeated Vic Roberts and Kevin Gould 18-13.
Mike Holmewood and Clive Neutze defeated Ed Meester and Greg Taylor 20- 13.
