It started with the Ladies League Tag team that kept local rivals Moss Vale Dragons scoreless in an 18-0 win.
The under-18s kept it going with a 28-22 victory also over Moss Vale, followed by a 50-12 win by reserve grade over Appin Dogs and first grade dominated in its 64-6 victory against the Dragons.
There was plenty to keep the crowd entertained in the reserve grade match, particularly in the second half as the Lions finished the game with 12 men.
In a feisty game against Appin, Mittagong had two players sin binned and one sent off, with the Dogs also having a player sent off after a third fight late in the match.
Mittagong coach Billy Hayward said despite the poor discipline in the second half, it was still a good performance from the Lions, who were clinical in the way they played.
Josh Harrison played well and scored a hat-trick for the home side and Hayward said Mitch Harrison and Simon Reid were also standouts in Sunday’s game.
“We had a really good first half again. Our completion was great and our discipline was great in the first half.. Our support play was everything today and second efforts were great,” he said.
“We were really clinical. But the job’s not done, we’ve got eight weeks to go.”
This Sunday the Lions will be back at home and will take on second placed Picton Magpies.
In 2017, Mittagong finished with just one loss during the year, which was against Picton.
Hayward said they keen to get win this weekend and settle some “unfinished business”.
After a loss to Narellan the week before, the under-18 Lions were keen to secure another win.
Coach Jake Tonitto said they spoke about the disappointment of the previous week and what they needed to go to get a better result in the local derby.
“Game management has been a big focal point for us and they’re slowly starting to learn how to manage different situations in games,” he said.
The Lions went in with the motto ‘whatever it takes’ and that’s just what they did.
“We got the result we wanted and the result the boys deserved,” Tonitto said.
After switching off in the game against Narellan, Tonitto said the Lions were more focused in Sunday’s match but there were still a few lapses in which they conceded tries.
The Lions will now focus on this weekend’s match which will be another tough one.
“We just take each week as it comes and if we keep winning football games the ladder will take care of itself.”
Tyler Hickey scored a hat-trick for Mittagong while Brendan Bayliss and Kai Wortz picked up a try each ith Wortz slotting four conversions.
Moss Vale was again down on troops and coach Matt Burke said the team put in plenty of effort but was let down by its execution at crucial times during the game.
“It was a good effort by the boys. Everyone dug in and did their job,” he said.
“We just need to keep chipping away and get better every week and get the attitude right. We go off the ball for 10 minutes and it costs us points.”
The young Dragons will have the bye this weekend which comes at a welcome time for Burke.
He hoped they would be able to welcome back players from injury for their next match against Picton in two weeks time.
