Up against Hill Top and playing at home, the Bushrangers went down 3-2.
Last time the two sides met, Hill Top lost 4-0 and Kookaburras player Michael Murray said it was good to finally get a win over Yerrinbool.
“We came out pretty hard at them all over the field and everyone did their job,” he said.
“We just fought harder, chased harder and pushed the ball around quicker. We tried to stay one step ahead of them.”
After a tough loss last time, Murray said it was a much needed win for Hill Top.
With a big crowd out at Yerrinbool in support of the Motor Neurone Disease fundraiser day, there was a good atmosphere and Murray thanked the club for putting on a good day.
Bushrangers coach Ben Lynch said it was a disappointing result, but given they had played far from their best football, was still happy to only have lost by a point.
Kris Spilarewicz and John Friedewald found the back of the net for Hill Top and a Yerrinbool own goal was the third goal.
Daniel Bowden and Ben Cosgrove were the goalscorers for Yerrinbool.
Lynch said his side’s composure on the ball was what let them down in Saturday’s match and they were unable to “slow the game down and play proper soccer”.
“It was definitely a tough loss for us on a special day.”
The Bushrangers rushed their play during the game which Lynch said put them under pressure and allowed Hill Top to take advantage of their mistakes.
But while the team was disappointed to suffer its first loss for the year, Lynch said he was still pleased with the effort shown out on the field.
“No one gave up at all. We knew we weren’t playing our best but the effort was there to try and get something our of it.”
“Hopefully it’ll kick the boys into gear.”
Hill Top’s next match will be against Mittagong and Murray said the Kookaburras needed to continue playing as they has been and keep the momentum going.
Yerrinbool remains on top of the competition ladder, three points ahead of Hill Top in second spot.
In the other men’s premier league match, Moss Vale and Mittagong fought out a 0-0 draw.
Moss Vale coach Gordon Boyd said it was not a great performance from his team but was still pleased they managed to keep Mittagong from finding the back of the net.
“Mittagong put us under pressure for the whole game and played very well. We didn’t play very well at all,” he said.
Moss Vale again had several players unavailable for Saturday’s match.
“A number of players had to double up. It’s unfortunate but it’s not an excuse,” Boyd said.
“We defended well when Mittagong attacked [but] it was a game with not many chances for either team. It was very much a midfield battle.”
Boyd said this year was a “rebuilding year” for Moss Vale and the team would try to consolidate its spot on the league ladder and continue to improve each week.
Moss Vale will have a few players back for next weekend’s match against Bowral.
However there will still be a few players out with injury, with yet another injury coming out of the game against Mittagong.
Earlier in the week, Mittagong forfeited its Darrly Kill Cup match against Bowral.
The next round of matches will be on July 4 with Yerrinbool to take on Bowral while Hill Top will face Moss Vale.
