Jason McCartney is so much more than a retired footballer. Born in western Victoria, in 2002 he was at a nearby pub when a bomb exploded in Bali. More than 200 lives were taken, 88 of them Australian. He received severe burns across half his body but recovered to such an extent that he returned to the AFL. Briefly. That wasn’t the end of McCartney involvement with the sport – far from it.

WHEN Jason McCartney played his first game of senior football for Nhill he could have stayed on the ground at half-time to play with the under-14s instead of joining the rest of the team back in the changerooms.
