The Southern Highlands Cancer Leadership Committee is very pleased to bring you this year’s Cancer Services Directory, published again through the very generous support of Southern Highland News. Many thanks are due to our community newspaper for continuing to promote the work of our committee in spreading the word about cancer services.
In following our practice of giving the issue a theme, for this 10th edition of the booklet we have chosen ‘Blood Cancers’. The idea is to inform all of us a little more about haematology, a lesser-known area of the cancer field. To that end, we are grateful for the special articles you will find inside from The Leukaemia Foundation, Rare Cancers Australia, and Dr Silvia Ling, Specialist Haematologist.

How timely it is then, that in 2018 we have seen the start of a local service for those haematology patients without health insurance. Instead of having to travel to Liverpool, these patients can now receive their treatment at the Cancer Centre within the Southern Highlands Private Hospital. More on that service inside. It is a sad fact of life that not all cancer treatments can succeed. Dr Vince Roche has kindly written an article for us about recognising the time when we have done all we possibly can.
Naturally our booklet also highlights the help that is regularly available for cancer patients, their families and carers in the Wingecarribee. Major local services and programs are featured : the Cancer Centre, Patient Transport Service, General and Practical Support program (GAPS), Can Assist, our committee’s website “Southern Highlands Cancer Connect”, and more. In addition, we again provide a comprehensive listing of local organisations and agencies which cater for cancer patients. All these Directory listings are fully up-to-date thanks to the checking carried out by two Cancer Council volunteers, Learne Warner and Hugh Berridge.
Just as we have been supported by those who contributed articles, we also benefit again from the backing of the businesses who have advertised in the publication.
