Professor Michelle Simmons was named the 2018 Australian of the Year in recognition of her pioneering research and inspiring leadership in quantum computing.
She is a UNSW Professor of physics and director of the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence in Quantum Computation and Communication Technology.
Michelle and her team are leading the ‘space race’ in a computer era to build the first quantum computer.
If they succeed, this technology could revolutionise drug design, weather forecasting, self-driving vehicles and artificial intelligence among others.
The talk will be hosted and presented by Conversely Southern Highlands.
Conversely Southern Highlands curator Ange Greig said this visit was a great honour.
“Michelle is a fantastic speaker with expertise in an area most of us don’t have any exposure to,” Ms Greig said.
“It will be an inspiring talk for all, especially those students with an interest in the sciences.”
Ms Simmons will visit the Highlands for an afternoon tea and presentation at Wombat Hollow on June 3.
She will also address Frensham School that morning for their 105th birthday celebrations.
Wombat Hollow is located at 300 Kirkland Road, East Kangaloon.
