May 23 is Wear Orange Wednesday, better known as WOW Day and is a national day of appreciation that recognises the dedication and work of State Emergency Service (SES) volunteers.
The focus of WOW Day is to encourage the community to wear orange, which is the official colour of the SES uniform.
People can show their support of SES volunteers by uploading a picture of themselves, their families, or their friends wearing orange to social media.
There are 40,000 SES volunteers across Australia who volunteer about one million hours of their own time to help communities in times of natural hazards and emergencies each year.
In the past 12 months, NSW volunteers have responded to more than 50,000 tasks, whether it was helping their communities in times of severe weather, responding to road crashes or helping other emergency services.
