It will be chaired by the Secretary-General Dr Tim Aistrope.
This is a Rotary program hosted by the three Southern Highlands Rotary Clubs, Bowral-Mittagong, Berrima District and Moss Vale.
This year 10 teams from the local high schools will be debating world issues such as climate change, the situation in the Syrian Republic, violence against women and the issues in the South China Sea.
Teams are Year 10 students who have to represent a country that is a member of the United Nations and debate the draft resolutions from the perspective of the country they represent.
This enables the students to have a wider appreciation of world affairs, history, culture, and economics and also to realise how hard it is to find consensus on the world stage. They gain, not only in debating skills, but also in confidence and knowledge. They are encouraged to dress in the costume of the country to help them “get into character”.
The winning debating team and the team that wins the Peace prize, will both go through to the National MUNA that is held in Canberra in August at Old Parliament house.
The program commences at 9am with the opening by the Wingecarribee Shire Council representative, Cr Gordon Markwart. The public is welcome to attend with a small fee of $10 for catering.
