It doesn’t matter where you live, the weather, is a topic that engages most people.
In fact you don’t even have to know the person you are talking to, as the topic of weather connects all people with most having a story to tell or at least an opinion.
It would also be fair to say that any weather prediction is not something that should be written in stone. After all the forecast may say rain but the sun is often shining bright.
Perhaps the most apt description for the weather is that it is unpredictable.
Despite this we all like to look into a climate crystal ball to find out what lies ahead as far as the weather is concerned.
No doubt the big question on the lips of many people in the Highlands at the moment is “what can we expect during the winter months ahead?”
While Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) climatologist Felicity Gamble has forecast a warmer than average end to autumn, the jury is still out for winter.
Cold conditions are usually a given at some point and the good news in the Highlands is that most people are well prepared for such a situation – warm jackets, scarves, gloves and hats are in the closet, central or wood heaters are in place to keep the home warm.
But just how cold it will get this winter in the Southern HIghlands is really anyone’s guess. Some will look forward to the chance to rug up and start the fire while there will be others considering a holiday in warmer locations.
However, there is one winter condition that seems to get most Highlanders excited – snow.
It has been a few years since our last good dump – for Southern Highlands standards that is. The region looked like a winter wonderland on July 17, 2015.
Yes it only lasted for one day but it was beautiful.
We aren’t really equiped for it – no snow tyres, or chains and nor snow shovels – but few will deny that a snowy day in the Highlands is special.
The weather forecast is that maybe we will get snow, maybe we won’t – nothing unusual with that prediction.
Here’s hoping we can enjoy a Southern Highlands snow daze in winter 2018.
