We put this question out to the public on Facebook last week and were inundated with responses. It became clear that Highlanders have many concerns about dangerous roads and intersections in the region.
The question was prompted by the intersection of Holly and Moss Vale Roads, Burradoo, which has been described by Wingecarribee mayor Ken Halstead as a “death trap”.
While many who responded to our Facebook call out agreed with the concerns about this Burradoo intersection they also drew attention to many other problem areas.
The intersection of Rush Lane and Old Hume Highway at Braemar as well as several other sections along the Old Hume Highway; various intersections along Argyle Street, Moss Vale; Kirkham Road at the railway bridge in Bowral and various sections of dirt road along Wombeyan Caves Road were mentioned.
Other intersections along Moss Vale Road, Burradoo, and the intersection of Station and Bowral Streets, Bowral, were also mentioned.
Anyone who has navigated any of the suggested problem areas would no doubt agree with the concerns voiced.
Comments made by some, who directed their criticism firmly at people who don’t follow the road rules, are equally valid. But sadly no matter how much campaigning to raise awareness, no matter how clear the traffic signs are and no matter how much police presence there is, some people will always buck the rules – putting the well-being of others in danger.
Needless to say solid measures need to be put in place so that even the most ignorant, selfish drivers can’t threaten the safety of others.
The Southern Highland News has in the past called on its readers to identify problem roads and intersections. The good news is that several problem areas of the past no longer appear on the list. These include the right-hand turn off Bowral Road into Tulloona Avenue, Bowral; the intersection of Lyell Street and the Old Hume Highway, Mittagong.
Here’s hoping some of the latest suggested problem roads soon become a distant memory.
