The Gallipoli campaign remains one of the most significant and important events in our history.
Images of Australian soldiers landing at Anzac Cove only to head towards their death are some of the most emotive scenes Australians have ever known.
According to the Australian War Memorial website, the Gallipoli campaign cost 26,111 Australian casualties, including 8141 deaths.
It was the start of the Anzac legacy, one that has since lived on through generations of servicemen and women who embody the Australian spirit.
The importance of April 25 is evident each year as millions of Australians pay their respects to military personnel past and present by attending a service.
And while this date marks a special day for Australians both at home and abroad, it is important that we remember the significance of this day throughout the year.
It is imperative that we as a nation take the time to remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.
It is exactly for this reason that we should remember this every day.
The freedom and safety we enjoy in Australia are because of what many brave men and women have done in the past.
And not just soldiers.
There have been thousands of men and women who have worked alongside soldiers in roles such as medical staff, ambulance drivers, transport and logistics support staff that have ensured the soldiers could do their job. They continue to do so and while it is soldiers that we first think of when it comes to Anzac Day, these people deserve to be commemorated too.
Simpson and his donkey have become the iconic image of people such as these that also risk their lives to help others.
We must also remember on this day not only those who lost their lives in WWI but in the many other wars which have since been fought.
Their courage and bravery serves as an inspiration to everyone who is proud to call this country their home.
And while we must take time to remember the fallen, we should not forget the men and women who are currently serving overseas to ensure that what has been won by those before them is never lost.
Lest We Forget.
