A community reading day will be held at Wingecarribee Family Support on Thursday, April 12.
Paint the town REaD (PTTR) is a national charity that encourages reading, talking, singing and rhyming with children from the time they’re born.
Council’s Community Development Coordinator Cath Brennan said promoting early literacy skills was important to children’s development.
“Today, with everyone so busy, it’s important to set some time aside to give our children the best possible start,” she said.
“Studies have shown that early literacy skills are developed in the first five years of a child’s life and greatly impact on their ability to learn to read and write at school.”
The two-hour community reading event will begin at 10 am and will feature morning tea, games, craft and storytelling for children aged up to five years.
“We’re encouraging children to wear red in anticipation of a special visit from the Bookapus mascot,” added Ms Brennan.
Wingecarribee Family Support is located at 1A Crimea Street, Balaclava.
