Riches competed in the Commonwealth Games Rugby League Championship in Moreton Bay, Queensland as a part of the Australian disabled rugby league team recently.
The team won 4-nil against New Zealand in the finals.
The championships showcased 10 Commonwealth nations including Australia, England, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Fiji, Samoa and Tonga.
Nick’s father Terry Riches said NSW had an advantage in its five disabled rugby league teams.
“We’re a well-established team. It doesn’t surprise me that we won,” Riches said.
“It was Australia making the breaks. We have smaller, faster players and a better game plan.
“The Kiwis were physical, our guys were attacking – it was a physical game.”
Terry Riches said Nick performed well on the wing.
Nick was one metre from scoring a try until one of the New Zealand players caught up to him and held him back.
