This grant gives the garden the opportunity to do what it does best – grow plants. Lots of plants are already grown in the existing working nursery, and by many volunteer growers at their homes, and these plants are sold at the annual April Autumn Plant Fair and other garden events during the year. Plant sales provide an important source of revenue, but not enough to sustain a growing and developing botanic garden.
The new nursery will focus on growing collectable and hard to find plants that are suitable for the Highlands climate. More importantly, this retail nursery will be open to the public on a regular basis and will provide a steady income stream for the garden coffers.
In due course, once we obtain a licence, the nursery will propagate rare and endangered native plants which will also be sold to the public.
Work has already begun on the construction of the nursery and will continue over the next little while. The fit out will take a bit longer as the funding we received doesn’t cover the cost of fit out to complete the job. So, watch our website www.shbg.com.au for an announcement towards the end of autumn on the opening of our retail nursery at the garden.
