A football caught Wilson’s eye one day in primary school, and she decided to pick it up and kick it around.
One of her teachers, who was an under 9s coach, saw her potential and encouraged her to try out for their team.
Wilson gave it a go and never looked back. Since then, the now 15-year-old has played football for the past six years. She started playing for Mittagong before she moved on to the Southern Branch and the Camden Tigers.
Wilson said as a female in the sport she was put down, but she was determined to prove any naysayers wrong.
“I kept getting put down as a girl in football,” she said. “I trained and I went to camps. I wanted to go somewhere.”
Wilson has played in the state titles two years in a row since 2015, and was selected for the Ultimate Fiji Cup.
She also contributes to the sport as a referee and a volunteer at the Moss Vale Soccer Club canteen two days a week.
Wilson said she felt proud to mentor female players rising up the ranks. “I want to be a part of the community and keep it growing,” she said.
