The Southern Highlands Cup and Eric Plain Trophy tournament will be held at Bowral Bowling Club from 10am to 1.30pm on Saturday.
The tournament will be held in memory of late Robertson Bowling Club lawn bowler and Southern Tablelands District president Eric Plain.
Players from Robertson, Bundanoon and Bowral will take part in the competition, which will feature two rounds of pairs and two rounds of triples.
Robertson Bowling Club bowls coordinator Graeme Tutt said Plain contributed a lot to the bowling club, as well as the wider lawn bowls community.
“He’s been president, secretary and a lot of the executive positions,” Tutt said.
“We thought there should be a tribute to honour what he’s done – that’s how this tournament came about.”
Tutt said Plain was a mentor to him in his earlier days as a lawn bowler.
“My first major championship competition was with Eric,” he said.
“For him to ask me to play in pairs and to win was a big thing.”
Southern Tablelands District member Kevin Moore said the memorial tournament was a “fitting reward” for his late friend.
“I think it’s a great way to remember him,” Moore said.
“He deserves it, it’s a fitting reward for him.” Bowral Bowling Club lawn bowler Gordon Lewis said Plain was heavily involved in the sport as well as the administration of the game across the Southern Tablelands.
“He was an established player, and a very good administrator,” Lewis said. “He was in many ways a quiet person, but he was a very loved member of the bowling community.”
I think it’s a great way to remember him. He deserves it, it’s a fitting reward for him.
