Building resilience
A free one-day workshop on Building Resilience will be held at the Quest for Life Centre at 13-33 Ellsmore Road, Bundanoon, on December 16. The workshop is open to parents and carers. You will leave knowing how to build resilience in the face of challenging circumstances, incorporate self-care into daily life, manage your emotions and recognise symptoms of burnout and what helps. JP desks
Justice of the Peace services at various JP desks across the Highlands will take a break over the Christmas and New Year period. The last days the desks will be open in 2017 are: Hill Top General Store – December 12; Springetts Arcade Bowral - December 13; Moss Vale Super IGA - December 14; Highlands Marketplace Mittagong - December 15 and 16.
The desks will re-open in the January 2018: Springetts Arcade Bowral – January 17; Moss Vale Super IGA – January 18; Highlands Marketplace Mittagong - January 19 and 20; Colo Vale Markets – February 3; Hill Top General Store February 13.
Journey through Bethlehem
On Friday and Saturday, December 15 and 16, the Mittagong Anglican Church will recreate first century Bethlehem to remind the community of the meaning of the first Christmas.
Visitors can journey through Bethlehem’s recreated streets, meeting villagers, Roman legionaries, wise men, shepherds who watch over their animals, and Mary, Joseph and Jesus (played by a real baby). This is a free event that includes refreshments and will run from 4 to 7pm.
First Fleeters
The Fellowship Ship First Fleeter Southern Highlands Chapter will hold its 13th Anniversary Christmas Lunch on december 13 from 11.45am in the Alexander Room at the Mittagong RSL. Ever-popular Guest Speaker Robert Griffin will this year speak about ‘Millers Point: from windmills and wharves to heritage and gentrification’. This is a topical subject with meaningful connections to the First Fleet ancestors. So many Colonial buildings survive and now change is occurring in this area which is so significant to indigenous and modern Australian history, culture and heritage.
Miniature railway
Highlands Miniature Railway will be set up at the Moss Vale showground on December 16 from 9.30am to 2.30pm (weather permitting) at the far eastern corner of Moss Vale Showground. The Miniature railway group welcomes new members. Working bees are usually held on Tuesdays and people can be trained in track laying, carriage maintenance, grounds improvement, trainee driving and guards. Details: Laurie Kent on 0408 419 768.
National Servicemen
The next meeting of the National Servicemen’s Association Southern Highlands Sub-branch will be held on December 13. The meeting will begin at 10.30am at Mittagong RSL, on the Old Hume Highway. Christmas program
The Mittagong Uniting Church has a full program of activities on Christmas Eve and Christmas day. A morning worship carol service will be held at the church in Albert Street, Mittagong, from 10am on December 24. Christmas Eve carols will also be held on the same day from 5pm to 6pm with the church doors open from 4.30pm for a cuppa, cordial and catch up. The Christmas Day service led by Rev Dr David Manton will be held from 10am on December 25.
