The opening followed a two-year refurbishment of the site which now boasts new informal lawn areas, park seating and picnic tables.

Also included is a new dog off-leash area with watering fountain, fencing, security gating and sandstone block rest area for everyone to enjoy.

On hand for the unveiling was Mayor Ken Halstead, who paid tribute to local historians Dr Leah Day and Tim McCartney for their contributions in unearthing the background to the site. This background can be traced back over 150 years to the men and women of the Fitz Roy Iron Works.

The mayor also thanked the council staff responsible for the make-over, saying the improvements complemented the precinct which includes nearby Lake Alexandra.

I encourage everyone to invite their friends to visit the new-look Alexandra Square this summer and enjoy the Shire’s latest public parkland for themselves.

A quick reminder that time is running out to donate to the Mayor’s Giving Tree.

The tree is located in the foyer of Council’s Customer Service Centre in Elizabeth Street, Moss Vale.

Non-perishable food stuffs and gifts for children are the most sought after items.  The only real restriction we ask is to not wrap the gifts.

All donated items will be passed onto the local branch of the Salvation Army where they will be sorted before being distributed in time for Christmas Day.

Gifts can be left by the tree up until and including Friday, December 15.
