On Friday, December 1, the community was invited to celebrate its completion at an unveiling of the plaque that reads, ‘Alexandra Square Restoration Project’.
More than 50 people enjoyed the sun-lit afternoon with a barbecue from the Bowral Lions club, live music, a jumping castle, face painting and funny shaped balloons.
Mittagong locals Dell and Doug attended the event, and stood on the exact spot where they used to “dance to rock ‘n’ roll” at the former Mittagong Bowling Club.
They said they are pleased with the revitalised site, but thought there was an important oversight in the design.
“It’s a lovely concept and we’re glad it’s being used again.
“But it would be good to have some public toilets and perhaps some electric barbecues,” Doug said.
Greg Bray, the manager of the site, which has been part of a charity trust since 1885, said the space was “meaningful and well thought out” by the council, who spent more than a decade trying to find a solution for the area.
“It’s for all people in Mittagong to enjoy – to bring their dogs, their families, to have a coffee here on a weekend morning,” he said.
The works, which commenced in mid-April this year, are estimated to have cost about $300,000.
